During our two-week long participatory press campaign, we received 200 calls, most which were about Elder Abuse within the family...
“I am 74 and my husband is 79. We are unable to have a single meal in
peace in our own house, because our daughter-in-law
and son, both are constantly taunting or cursing us, while
we sit quietly and try to gulp down our food along with
our unmarried daughter, who is on life-long medication.
Our teenaged grandsons are not allowed to talk to us anymore, although
we raised them with so much love and care.
What are we being punished for?”
“They beat me, denied me food and even a daily bath. I haven’t changed
my sari in several months now. If there’s anything like hell, it’s my
life.”
“My youngest daughter-in-law calls me a ‘mad-man’ and
tells me to go to a Mental Hospital. I urge you to ask her
that if I have done anything wrong, I am ready to apologise, even at
this age. It’s difficult to pull on under this daily tension.
Some day, my dead body will be found in the colony around.”
